Emergent Readers

Who Are Emergent Readers?

  • Can be young, new readers in Pre-K through grade 3
  • Can be children, teens, adults or more mature individuals working hard to become literate for the first time.
  • Have difficulty learning new words and how to read those words in context (i.e., decoding, fluency, etc.
  • All ability levels

How Emergent Readers Can Use These Tools:

  • Emergent readers can more easily learn new or unknown vocabulary and spelling words with these tools.
  • Because of the challenges of learning to read and write for the first time, emergent readers may experience some degree of “text overwhelm” in addition to other difficulties. Such a reader can use the tools to help improve attention, focus, comprehension and retention of content.
  • Emergent readers can use these tools with portable e-readers and tablets, too. (Protective film recommended for device screens to prevent scratching with this application.)

Examples

  • By moving the tool’s Reading Notch or Reading Window over a new word (from left to right), emergent readers can easily breakdown words into phonemes or syllables for more effective learning (decoding).
  • Can select from among the yellow, deep blue or clear/non-glare reading filter colors provided for each tool to help improve visual comfort when learning to read.
  • Can isolate 1-2 lines of text (depending on font size) with each tool. Surrounding text not needing immediate attention will be covered by the tools. As a result, distractions and “text overwhelm” will decrease. In addition, comprehension and retention of content read will also improve.
  • Emergent readers can also experience more focus when using the tools when reading e-books and other digital text on e-readers, tablets, and other hardware. (Please place a protective film on tech device screens to prevent scratches.)
